Instructor Bios
Grand Circle Field School (GCFS) is in the process of reviewing its class offerings and outreach programs in order to better serve visitors to our partners Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Vermilion Cliffs and Grand-Canyon Parashant National Monuments. We are devoting our time to developing more Elderhostel classes and classes for middle and high school groups to further the vision and mission of GCFS.

More adult classes to come! Sign up for one of our exciting classes listed below -- and be sure to check back as new classes are added throughout the season. If you have a group of people, (including school-based trips) and would like a custom trip planned, see the You Design It section at the bottom of this page.

RAFTING THE SAN JUAN RIVER

Dates:
May 17-25, 2008
(orientation in Bluff on May 16)
Instructor: Christa Sadler and Greg Woodall
Fee:
$1,980

The San Juan River is welcoming and warm, silty and playful. From wide, cottonwood-lined valleys to narrow limestone canyons with hidden waterfalls and grottos, its bright thread weaves through some of the most extraordinary scenery in North America, and it is the perfect classroom for exploring the geology, archeology, history and ecology of this region.

We will travel the San Juan for nine days, from Bluff, Utah to Clay Hills Crossing; total distance of 86 miles. In May the water is usually fairly high, and this will allow us ample time to hike and explore, as well as relax and savor the joys of camp, and the water hurrying by our campsites.

Trip leader and geologist Christa Sadler has worked in the region for over two decades as an educator, guide and boatman. She has worked for several years with Wild Rivers; the outfitter of this trip.

Archaeologist & ethnobotonist Greg Woodall will lead us to ancient ruins and take us "grocery shopping" the way the ancient ones did.

See course syllabus for details and daily itinerary.

Lake Powell: A dreadful mistake or a practical solution for a power-hungry and water-thirsty population? Extraordinarily beautiful—or bizarrely ugly? Is Lake Powell going dry? Is Glen Canyon re-emerging? The answers to these questions are highly subjective. But rolled into just one question, “Is Lake Powell interesting?” the answer is easy: Yes, wildly interesting... and silent and beautiful sea kayaks are the perfect way to encounter the cathedral-like canyons of this fascinating place.

6-Day Trip:
Trip to Escalante: The Escalante Arm of Lake Powell and its long side canyons provide remote and rugged hiking and paddling destinations such as Cathedral in the Desert and Davis Gulch. Experience spectacular arches, narrow slot canyons and ancestral Puebloan sites.

5-Day Trip:
Kayak Lake Powell, travelling up-lake by shuttle boat to base camps in the Navajo Mountain area. There, we’ll explore twisting side canyons by kayak and hike deep into the slickrock terrain beyond the lake. Our outfitter will supply kayaks and gear, kayak instruction and wonderful river-style meals.
