Kids taking in the viewIn today's complicated and fast-paced world with an abundance of electronic information just a "Google" away, it is all too easy to confine children’s education to the classroom. Sadly, this has lead to a critical disconnect between children and the natural world that journalist Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods has dubbed "nature deficit disorder."

But when Nature is the classroom, education is experiential and transcendent and it facilitates children’s reconnection with awe-inspiring Nature. Studies show that children who learn in natural classrooms show increased self-esteem, problem solving abilities, and motivation to learn more. And, it’s fun!

Teaching children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives.

GCFS instructors can tailor an experiential education adventure to meet your teaching needs. The public lands we serve offer the perfect classroom setting to teach the natural history of the land through geology, archeology, botany and biology and the cultural history of the land through ancient, early and current inhabitants. The setting evokes thoughtful consideration of the geo-political and environmental issues that lie at the intersection of nature and people: management of land and rivers to provide water, power, recreation and solitude while protecting the welfare of the land itself and its native wildlife and vegetation.

Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots Program

We are proud to announce our partnership with Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Roots and Shoots program.

Educational components

Read descriptions of multi-day classes that are big hits with the kids! And read a Thank You card (PDF - 1.48 MB) from students on a recent Lake Powell kayak trip—it's the best kind of testimonial!

Service Element

GCFS can provide a service element to your class. Assist on NPS and BLM projects such as scientific surveys, revegetation of native species and removal of invasive species, trail maintenance and graffiti control.

We are proud to be working in partnership with Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program. Join us in one of our projects or contact us to learn how you can design one of your own.
